Next week could be the cold core of winter with very low temperatures and snowfall across Scotland.
The coldest and snowiest conditions are likely to be from midweek with lows of -15C possible and as much as 30cm of snow.
How cold?
Temperature will depend on how much snow falls, where it falls and how clear skies will be at night.
This far out it’s impossible to forecast details like that, but I’d say -15C is possible in the Highlands in the right conditions.
Will it snow?
Yes, there will be snow. Initially snow this will affect the Northern Isles, then the Western Isles, Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire from Monday.
Further south, for places like Glasgow and Edinburgh, snow is more likely later in the week.
How much snow?
Around 15-20cm of snow may fall in the north Highlands in the first few days of next week and this could rise to around 30cm later in the week.
The Cromdale, Dufftown and Aberlour area will also be a focus with similar values possible.
Southern Scotland will initially avoid most of the snow.
Later next week, fronts from the south could bring a lot of snow to the UK, although at this stage it looks like it’ll remain across England and Wales – this may change nearer the time.
