Parts of Scotland woke up to snow on Tuesday morning as a cold snap spread across the country.

The Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow, Stirling, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Lanarkshire, Perthshire, Tayside, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, Moray, and parts of the Highlands from Inverness up to Thurso were expected to be the worst affected.

In Aberdeenshire, the snow gates on the A939 at The Lecht were closed for more than four hours.

They eventually reopened at around 10.49am, with police confirming they were “passable with care”.

Due to the tier four Covid restrictions in place across mainland Scotland, the country’s roads are expected to be quieter than normal.

Drivers heading out have been warned to beware of icy roads. Pedestrians have also been urged to avoid untreated pavements.

Police Scotland has also issued winter road safety guidance with advice for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

A spokesperson said: “Be prepared. Be safe. Be seen.

“To report an accident phone 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
