Aberdeen boss Stephen Robinson hoping for further signings before deadline

Stephen Robinson would like to “reinforce every position” as he prepares Aberdeen for the trip to Celtic Park just before the transfer window closes.

The Dons lost 1-0 at home in the William Hill Premiership to Rangers on Sunday, which was only their second defeat of the season in eight games in all competitions.

The Northern Irishman has refurbished his squad during a summer of change at the Granite City club but retains an open mind.

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash at Parkhead, Robinson said the Dons were “not close to anyone coming in at the moment” while hoping to add before the deadline, which in Scotland is on Thursday.

He said: “I’d reinforce every position. I’m a selfish manager, so of course. But I’m not sure we’d be able to do that.

“We’ve brought in a lot of players, a lot of change, 10 free transfers, three signings we’ve paid a bit of money for.

“If there was anything left, of course there are certain areas that I want to strengthen.

“We’ve got two wingers in the building. We’ve got young Andrew Fasanya coming through as well.

“If we bring somebody in, we have to be careful we don’t block younger players’ pathways, and they have to be significantly better, of course.

“But if there’s a chance to improve the squad, then yeah, definitely we’re still looking.”

Robinson expects the toughest of challenges against Martin O’Neill’s champions, who are already top of the table after just three fixtures, two points ahead of St Mirren.

The former Buddies boss said: “A very tough challenge. They’ve got top, top players.

“They’ve consistently been the best team in the league for a long, long time now, and that hasn’t changed.

“Domestically they’ve been very good. It’s a tough game, of course.

“Anytime you go to Celtic Park and play against Martin’s teams, it’s going to be a tough challenge, and we have to rise to it.

“It’s a tough fixture list. We knew that before the start of the season.

“So we go down there, as I say with every game, with lots to improve on.

“Good things came out of the (Rangers) game as well. There wasn’t a lot between the two sides when you look at Rangers, who have spent close to £30 million. There wasn’t a lot between the two sides.

“I don’t think we’re very far away. There are bits that we have to be better at, and some bits that we’re happy with.”
