Aberdeen have terminated the contract of manager Jim Goodwin following the team’s 6-0 defeat to Hibernian at Easter Road.
Goodwin had survived in his position after the club’s shock 1-0 defeat to non-league Darvel on Monday but the heavy defeat, to a Hibernian side whose own form has been patchy, saw the club take the decision to terminate his contract.
The news was confirmed in a post from the Aberdeen twitter account.
It read: “Following an unacceptable run of results since the World Cup break, the club confirms it has parted company with Jim Goodwin and first team assistant manager Lee Sharp with immediate effect.”
Goodwin had been in charge since February 2022, when chairman Dave Cormack appointed him to replace Stephen Glass.
Despite widespread changes to the playing squad and coaching staff, results over time did not significantly improve and the sacking came days after a public statement from Cormack warned Goodwin “has been left in no doubt that the board and the fans are seeking an immediate response from him and the players”.
The Dons have now only won once in their last ten games and currently sit in seventh place in the Premiership table.
After pressure on Goodwin had increased, an improved performance against Rangers in the League Cup final, when it took an extra time goal to win it for the Ibrox side, gave the manager some respite and some hope that the team had turned a corner.
However, a 5-0 defeat to Hearts followed, before the Scottish Cup defeat to sixth-tier Darvel and that set up a must-win against Hibernian.
The defeat leaves the club looking for a third manager in twelve months.
