Wednesday night’s premiership clash between Aberdeen and Celtic has been postponed after a late pitch inspection.
Aberdeen confirmed that the club contacted the Scottish Professional Football League earlier to arrange an inspection at Pittodrie ahead of the 8pm kick-off.
The club claim that weeks of heavy rain have left the pitch in a poor condition, with particular concern over an area of the surface at the Merkland end of the stadium.
It was confirmed shortly after the fixture was to be postponed.
The fixture was coming after Hearts’ William Hill Premiership title hopes suffered a blow with a 1-0 defeat at St Mirren on Tuesday night.
Groundstaff have been working to make the pitch playable, but the club said the surface remains heavy.
A referee is due to inspect the pitch at 4pm, with a decision on whether the match can go ahead expected shortly afterwards.
Supporters have been told they will be updated as soon as a final decision has been made.
An Aberdeen spokesperson said: “Please be aware Aberdeen FC contacted the SPFL earlier this afternoon to arrange a pitch inspection ahead of this evening’s William Hill Premiership game between Aberdeen and Celtic.
“Prolonged rain over the last few weeks has made the pitch heavy. The groundstaff have been working tirelessly to get it ready but there is an area of the surface at the Merkland end that is causing concern. A referee will inspect the pitch at 4pm and we will update supporters as soon as a decision has been made.”
It comes after it was announced that the premiership game between Dundee and Motherwell has been called off over a waterlogged pitch.
Following a 2.30pm inspection, officials decided that the game could not be played and has now been postponed to a later date.
A statement read: “After a thorough inspection, the decision has been made to call today’s match off due to unprecedented rainfall.
“The borderline decision was made by the match referee, and details of the rearranged fixture will be made available as soon as possible.”
