Aberdeen’s Cosgrove replacement facing four months out

Aberdeen have been dealt another blow after it was confirmed Sam Cosgrove’s replacement is facing up to four months out injured.

The club have revealed Ryan Edmondson, who has made just one substitute appearance, suffered an ankle injury in training.

A loan deal for the Leeds was rushed through before their opening day defeat to Rangers.

The 19-year-old was signed until January after Cosgrove tore knee cartilage during a pre-season friendly with Hibernian.

A statement on Wednesday evening said: “A subsequent scan has revealed he could be out for up to 3-4 months and Ryan has now returned to Leeds United to see a specialist who will determine the next steps in his treatment.”

It has not been confirmed whether the deal will be terminated, while Edmondson said he hoped to be back in Aberdeen soon.

He tweeted: “Absolutely gutted but I can assure you all that I will try my very best to get back fit and join the boys back up at Pittodrie soon.”

With Cosgrove due to be out for a minimum of another six to eight weeks and Curtis Main struggling with a thigh strain, the Dons have limited options up front.

Striker Bruce Anderson is one of eight self-isolating after two players tested positive for Covid-19.

The team’s match against Hamilton, which was scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed, as well as the clash with Celtic this coming Saturday.

Their next game – the rescheduled clash against St Johnstone – is set for Thursday, August 20.
