Alfredo Morelos pushing for more minutes as Rangers prepare for St Johnstone

Alfredo Morelos is pushing for more game time as Rangers prepare to host St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst says he will assess his squad ahead of the Premiership game following on from Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.

The win means only PSV Eindhoven stand between Rangers and a long-awaited return to the Champions League this season.

The first leg of the playoff is in Glasgow on Tuesday but the van Bronckhorst is fully focused on getting three points against the Saints.

Morelos recently returned from a long-term absence due to a thigh injury and has come off the bench in the last two games.

The Colombian marked his return with a goal against Kilmarnock last weekend and the manager believes his squad are getting better with each passing week. “We are improving every game.

“We play more games together and with that the players get used to one another.

“We are getting stronger and stronger each week and with each game we play.

“Of course, we saw last week against Kilmarnock we had a team defending in a low block. There were not many spaces for us to play in.

“But I think we approached the game really well, with a lot of patience. Sometimes I think you need patience in the home games.

“For us it’s another league game. We want to win every game that we play and we want to maintain our 100 per cent record.”

Defender Filip Helander remains out with a foot problem and midfielder Ianis Hagi has been sidelined since January after suffering cruciate ligament damage

Former Watford midfielder Daniel Phillips is in contention to make his St Johnstone debut after joining on a two-year deal this week.

Captain Liam Gordon, who is yet to play a first-team game this term due to injury, is fully fit and ready for action after coming through a B team game in midweek.

Murray Davidson is still suspended, while long-term absentees David Wotherspoon (knee), Chris Kane (knee), Callum Booth (Achilles) and Tony Gallacher (leg) remain out.
