Andy Murray has expressed concern over the controversy surrounding Novak Djokovic’s struggle to compete at the Australian Open.
Djokovic is now in a legal battle with the Australian authorities after being denied entry to the country over his visa situation and rules about vaccination.
The world number one had been granted a medical exemption to allow him to compete in Melbourne but doubts have now been cast over the validity of his application.
The Serb’s appeal hearing will begin on Monday morning, Melbourne time, and he hopes to be given leave to take part in a major that he has won nine times.
Murray, who has been granted a wildcard entry to the Australian Open, expressed concern for his fellow player and said that he felt the whole controversy was damaging for the sport.
“I think everyone is shocked by it,” he said.
“I’m going to say two things on it just now. The first thing is that I hope that Novak is OK. I know him well, and I’ve always had a good relationship with him and I hope that he’s OK.
“The second thing: it’s really not good for tennis at all and I don’t think it’s good for anyone involved. I think it’s really bad.”
