Andy Murray has withdrawn from the French Open as he plans ahead for the upcoming grass court season.

The Scot had originally planned to take part at Roland Garros this month but he has now decided to give it a pass after a discussion with his coaching staff.

Withdrawing from the clay event will now allow the 36-year-old to prioritise his preparations for a busy grass-court campaign that kicks-off next month.

Murray has failed to win a match at any of the three clay-court Masters 1000 events over the last month and lost in straight sets to Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the Bordeaux Challenger last week.

And that came just a week after his first round Italian Open defeat to Fabio Fognini but earlier this month he claimed his first title since October 2019 with victory at the ATP Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence.

The French Open gets underway in Paris on Monday and will run until June 11.

This year’s Wimbledon kicks off on July 3.
