Angus Gunn eager to repay Scotland fans for show of faith in Munich

Angus Gunn claims Scotland are driven to repay the fans who stuck by them after the 5-1 mauling by Germany in Munich.

Tens of thousands of the Tartan Army travelled to Germany for the Euro 2024 opener against the host country on Friday but were left reeling after the 5-1 defeat.

Ahead of the second Group A game against Switzerland on Wednesday, the Norwich goalkeeper admitted that although the drubbing “still hurts”, he and his team-mates were touched by the support of the fans in the Munich Arena and are extra-incentivised to make amends against the Swiss, who beat Hungary 3-1 in their first game.

Gunn told the Scotland national team’s official X account: “Everyone’s still bitterly disappointed from the result and also the performance. I don’t think anyone did themselves justice.

“We let ourselves down, our families down and obviously the fans, which is probably the most difficult part to take.

“Seeing all the videos of everyone travelling over before the game, it looked unbelievable and even after a result like that, they were still there, singing and clapping at the end.

“It gives us a great boost, lifts us after such a disappointing result and just makes us want to want to repay them even more in the next two games.

“We know what we have to do, in terms of trying to get out of the group. Obviously, they (Switzerland) got a very positive result in their first game as well.

“So it’s going to be difficult but from our point of view, it’s pretty straightforward what we have to aim for.

“The manager reiterated that after the game. Everyone was down (and) dejected. But we’ve got a few more days before the next game, so you have to pick yourself up.

“Straight after, it’s difficult to see the positives but a few days on, you look back at how far we’ve come, how well we’ve done to qualify and you have to take belief from that going into the last two games.

“Obviously we’ve played against the pot one team now already, so that’s out of the way and we’ve got a target – two wins – that’ll get us through the group.

“If we can do that, then we’ve reached our target and then we look forward after that.”
