British tennis player Harriet Dart has apologised after complaining that her French opponent ‘smelled really bad’ during a match, ITV News’ Charlie Frost reports
British tennis player Harriet Dart has apologised for saying her opponent at the Rouen Open should put on deodorant because “she smells really bad”.
The 28-year-old made the remarks about France’s Lois Boisson, who beat the British number four in the first round of the tournament.
During a change of ends, Dart asked the umpire: “Can you tell her to wear deodorant because she smells really bad.”
Her comments were picked up by a courtside microphone and attracted criticism on social media. She later posted an apology to her Instagram account.

“Hey everyone, I want to apologise for what I said on court today, it was a heat-of-the-moment comment that I truly regret,” Dart wrote.
“That’s not how I want to carry myself, and I take full responsibility. I have a lot of respect for Lois and how she competed today. I’ll learn from this and move forward. Harriet.”
Boisson poked fun at the incident, posting an edited picture of herself on the court holding a can of deodorant and referencing the brand Dove, she wrote: “Apparently need a collab,” followed by two laughing emojis.
Dart, 28, was beaten 6-0 6-3 by the French player in the first round of the tournament, wrapping up the opening set in just 28 minutes.
Dart put up a better fight in the second set but failed to convert any of her six break points as Boisson eased through.
