Scottish tennis star Cameron Norrie will be among the top eight seeds at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career when the US Open gets underway next week.
Norrie is currently at his highest ever position of ninth in the world rankings and with 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev dropping out through injury he has been moved up to eighth-seed for the tournament held at Flushing Meadows in New York.
The 27-year-old British number one’s seeding position at the US Open could rise even higher to seventh if Novak Djokovic’s absence is confirmed.
The Serbian, currently ranked at number 6, missed the Australian Open due to his decision not to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and it is yet unclear if he will be able to take part due to US laws against unvaccinated visitors.
Norrie lost to 6-3 6-4 to Borna Coric in the semi-finals of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday.
But his excellent recent form means he climbs above Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev to surpass the previous high ranking of 10 that he achieved in April.
Norrie will now head to New York to prepare for the tournament, which begins on August 29.
