Hearts boss Derek McInnes has praised Cammy Devlin for his vital contributions to the side’s table-topping form and hopes a new deal for the Australian can be completed soon.
Devlin has been a key figure in the Hearts midfield as they have risen to the top of the table, and he turned in a man-of-the-match performance in the win at Celtic on Sunday that opened up a three-point gap between the sides.
The Australian international has been taking plenty of plaudits for his form, and the club have opened talks over a new deal for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
McInnes spoke about how impressed he has been with Devlin and noted how even as summer signings have captured excitement and attention from supporters, those who were already at the club have lifted their game.
“We did the calendar signing at Tynecastle last night, and I asked every kid their favourite player,” the Hearts boss said. “The answer was either Braga or Kyziridis.
“But there’s a wee reminder that guys who have been here a longer time, like Devlin, Shankland, Halkett, Kingsley, Baningime and all these players, they have all been key players this season.
“It’s good that they are getting recognised.”
The former Kilmarnock boss said he had always admired the Australian midfielder but feels there’s even more to Devlin’s game now, and that he is becoming more of a leader.
“Certainly from my point of view as an opposing manager, watching Hearts over the last wee while, I always thought Cammy was a good player,” he said.
“He’s got to take the credit for the improvements in his game this season. I think we’re seeing a lot more maturity and leadership in his performances.
“He’s more prominent, not only when he’s on the ball, but I think he’s got a big influence, and that’s what you want from your central midfield players. In the middle of the pitch, you can influence players around you, in front of you, and behind you.
“People will always be quick to point out what players can’t do, but I prefer to work with players and recognise the strengths and what they can do. Cammy has been a player who has been so consistent, and it’s nice that he’s getting a bit of recognition.
“I would like that recognition to come when he signs his contract, but it’s nice nonetheless.”
