Caroline Weir insists Scotland team are putting ticketing row behind them and focusing on Spain

Scotland star Caroline Weir insists that the national team players have put recent controversy behind them and are fully focused on playing Spain but says there are no regrets about raising issues with the SFA.

Ahead of the World Cup qualifier at Hampden, the Scotland players took to social media with an orchestrated series of messages complaining about the Scottish FA’s ticketing strategy for the match.

The Scottish FA responded with a statement claiming the team had misunderstood how ticket sales worked, and said that they had been actively promoting the match. The association then claimed that staff had been hurt by the criticism, which could have remained private “without negative headlines and ill-informed sharing”.

Scotland captain Rachel Corsie then added to the controversy when she suggested there was inequality between how the Scottish FA treats men’s and women’s football.

Weir confirmed that talks between the governing body and senior players had taken place behind the scenes but that the issue had not been a distraction from Tuesday night’s game.

“That’s behind us now,” the Manchester City attacker said. “We are fully focused on the task in hand, which is a massive game against Spain tomorrow night.

“I think the focus on the training pitch has been excellent, and all the players look really determined to go out and put on a good performance. So that’s been our number one focus throughout the whole camp and the application of every player is as being really good.”

The players look good physically and tactically. We’ve had more time on the training pitch than we’re used to, which has been great. And I think we’re feeling prepared going into the Spain game tomorrow night.

“From day one, that’s been our focus and we’re ready to go tomorrow night.

“It is important,” she said. “And obviously that’s what we did last week.

“We came together as a group and decided that was how we wanted to do things.

“And I think Rachel Corsie touched on on everything last week so I won’t speak too much more about that because, you know, I want to speak about the game and but we felt comfortable enough to do that and we don’t have any regrets.”

The match itself is a tough challenge for Pedro Martinez Losa’s side after a bruising 8-0 defeat in Spain earlier in the campaign. Weir feels that although that match was only six months ago, the team has improved under the new manager and are in a much stronger position.

“I think we learned a lot from that game,” she said. “And it feels like a long time ago, even though it was only November but I feel like the squad is in a different place and I think going into that game, we probably had a little bit too much fear, maybe too much respect to Spain.

“We know they’re a top side. There’s no doubt about that. They’ve got some of the best players in the world and they’re a good side.

“But I think we need to be better at the things we can be better at, you know, being a little bit more aggressive, putting them under more pressure which I think we maybe didn’t do enough of in Spain.”
