Scotland star Caroline Weir will need surgery after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in her left knee.

The 28-year-old playmaker was forced off in the first half of the national team’s 1-1 draw with Belgium at Hampden on Tuesday.

After the game manager Pedro Martinez Losa says he was angry with how Weir was targeted and accused the referee of failing to protect the players.

Her club side Real Madrid revealed on Thursday that had ruptured the ligament and will go under the knife in the coming days.

A statement said: “After the tests carried out on our player Caroline Weir by the Real Madrid Medical Services, she has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee.

“The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.

“Weir suffered this injury during the Scotland-Belgium national team match last Tuesday.”

The former Hibs, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City star has 100 caps for Scotland and 17 goals.

She also represented Team GB at the 2020 Olympics held in 2021.
