Celtic have agreed a ‘deal in principle’ for the transfer of Arne Engels.
The Augsburg midfielder emerged as a top target for the Scottish champions during this transfer window and the club are now poised to add him to their ranks.
While some details are still to be ironed out, agreement is in place for a transfer fee that would be a record outlay for Celtic.
If all goes to plan, Celtic hope to unveil the 20-year-old on Friday, and he will be in attendance for Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Rangers at Celtic Park.
Engels came through the youth system at Club Brugge and played for their reserve side Club NXT in the Belgian second tier.
He was snapped up by Bundesliga side Augsburg last summer for a small fee but the Under-21 international saw his value rocket through an impressive debut campaign in Germany that saw him play 32 league games, scoring three times.
A move to Scotland would see him replace Matt O’Riley, who Celtic sold to Brighton last week.
Celtic still hope to do more business before the transfer window closes on Friday night. The club is looking to add a left-sided centre-back and while another midfield signing remains an option, it’s understood that would only be if the right circumstances present themselves.
