Celtic beat Lille 3-2 in final Europa League group game

Celtic have concluded their Europa League campaign with a 3-2 home win over Lille.

The Scottish champions already knew that they would be finishing bottom of their group and could not progress but they cast aside their recent troubles to beat the Ligue 1 side in an open match.

Christopher Jullien, Callum McGregor and David Turnbull all found the net for the hosts.

Neil Lennon made six changes to the side that drew 1-1 with St Johnstone last weekend, giving Patryk Klimala, Turnbull and Ismaila Soro starts and handing Conor Hazard the goalkeeping spot. Shane Duffy and Mohamed Elyounoussi returned to the side.

The new look team went ahead early on when Jullien rose high to flick a Turnbull corner on and into the net.

Lille replied almost immediately, Yusuf Yazici seizing on a poor pass from Callum McGregor to set up Jonathan Ikone for a tap in.

Celtic recovered from that setback quickly and were handed the chance to retake the lead on 28 minutes. Jeremie Frimpong was fouled and McGregor stepped up to slam in the resulting penalty.

The hosts held their lead well into the second half but Lille drew level again with just under twenty minutes left. Former Celt Timothy Weah rifled in a volley from 15 yards to stun his old team.

But Celtic rallied once again and after a run from Kristoffer Ajer up the right wing, a low ball into the middle was met by Turnbull and his crisp finish gave Celtic a consolation win at the end of a dismal campaign.
