Celtic boss Postecoglou: I won't be deterred by condescending critics

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has told his critics he won’t change his style to please them, and he is well aware of the expectations of the job.

The Australian has had mixed results since taking over at the club in the summer, working to revamp the squad at Parkhead and dealing with injury problems that have denied him the services of a number of first team players.

A draw at home to Dundee United on Sunday saw the team in sixth place in the Premiership, with some suggesting that three defeats and a draw from the first seven games mean Celtic can write off their title chances.

Postecoglou dismissed questions about that after the game, and as he prepared his side to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League, he insisted he’ll just keep working to improve the team.

He said: “It’s not frustrating. It’s just… if their intent is to be condescending to me and who I am and my career, then I guess they’re achieving their point.

“My point about that is, I’m not going to change my approach because people keep talking about the fact that there’s pressure, and it’s Celtic.”

The former Australia boss, who joined Celtic from Yokohama F Marinos, made it clear he didn’t think everyone was questioning his credentials or record, and said he was under no illusions about the expectations that came with the job.

He said: “I took that task on board when I accepted the position and I’ve been given the responsibility to rebuild the team that hopefully will be successful not just this year but in years to come.

“Every decision I make is with that purpose but I don’t think I’m living in some bubble where I think the responsibility wouldn’t lie with me.

“I don’t think people think that. I just think some people, and not all because some people have been fair with their scrutiny, but some just want to be condescending towards me. They have been from day one.

“They probably don’t think I deserve to be in this spot and that’s fine. That’s neither here nor there for me.”
