Celtic held by Legia Warsaw in Artur Boruc tribute as Hoops record second straight pre-season draw

Celtic were held to their second straight 2-2 pre-season draw as the Premiership champions gave former goalkeeper Artur Boruc a send-off to remember against Legia Warsaw.

The Pole hung up his gloves at the end of last season, but chose a testimonial match celebrating his career against Ange Postecoglu’s men.

The 42-year-old came on for the closing stages of the contest after playing the entire first half at the Stadion Miejski Legii Warszawa im. Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego after a thrilling encounter which saw the visitors throw away a two-goal lead.

Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda had given the Celts a commanding advantage but a mistake by newly-permanent signing Cameron Carter-Vickers handed the hosts a route back into the game.

Josue fired home the equaliser with 24 minutes remaining in the penultimate game before the Hoops get the defence of their Premiership crown under way.

New signing Alexandro Bernabei played from the start, though both sides made a raft of changes throughout an entertaining contest played in balmy conditions.

Boruc was cheered on to the pitch by both sets of supporters but was powerless to stop Hatate’s effort from giving the visitors the lead after 20 minutes.

Countryman Maeda doubled their advantage as Hatate turned provider two minutes before the interval.

Boruc was replaced at the half and less than 60 seconds later Carter-Vickers misjudged a long ball, allowing Maciej Rosolek to reduce the deficit.

And replacement keeper Scott Bain was unable to reach Josue’s equaliser as he swivelled on the edge of the area before finding the bottom corner on the volley to ensure the match ended all square.

Boruc got on the microphone afterwards to thank the travelling support and home fans as he ended his 24-year career on a high note.

Celtic face Norwich City in their final pre-season game on Saturday before the resumption of Premiership action with the visit of Aberdeen on the opening weekend.
