Celtic have announced the arrival of Danish midfielder Oliver Sorensen on a season-long loan from Parma.

The 24-year-old signed for the Serie A side last August after five years with Midtjylland in his homeland.

The Hoops have an option to buy Sorensen, who has made 37 appearances, including 20 starts, for Parma over the past year.

The Dane is set to be joined by Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and 19-year-old PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joel van den Berg, who were both at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training ground on Tuesday.

Celtic are also close to agreeing a deal for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, with the Scottish champions eyeing a possible six new arrivals before the deadline.

The Lithuanian international has been a top priority signing for Martin O’Neill this summer, and it’s understood there’s been a breakthrough in negotiations over the last 24 hours.

Gineitis is keen to move to Glasgow, with personal terms seen to be an issue.

The Scottish champions are also prioritising a left-back with the injured Kieran Tierney currently being covered by central defender Liam Scales.

Premiership clubs have until Thursday at 5pm to complete signings but Celtic have targeted the Europa League deadline of 11pm on Wednesday to finalise their squad.

When asked about numbers, assistant manager Shaun Maloney – speaking before the Sorensen deal was done – said: “When you’re looking at the really key ones within the squad, you’re looking at three to four.

“But then there might be some others. The club might decide to do business for the future as well.”

Johnstone has played more than 350 league games with the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Crystal Palace and the 33-year-old is set to provide competition for Viljami Sinisalo.

Maloney said: “Vil’s been fantastic for us this season. Whichever goalkeeper comes in, you have to say, ‘it’s up to you. You go and try and push for that position’.”
