Celtic have completed the signing of Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull.

The 21-year-old agreed a four-year deal with the Scottish champions, just hours after they were knocked out the Champions League.

Motherwell have received a club-record fee, surpassing the £1.75m Celtic paid to sign Phil O’Donnell from the Steelmen in 1994.

Turnbull was set to sign for Celtic last summer, but saw that move fall through after medical checks discovered a knee problem which required surgery.

The Scottish youth international spent the last 12 months working his way back to full fitness and featured prominently for the Steelmen at the start of this season.

But Turnbull, a Motherwell academy graduate, has now called time on his spell at Fir Park to seal his move to Parkhead.

He told Celtic’s website: “I’m absolutely delighted to be here, especially after what happened last year, and I’m ready to hit the ground running.

“I feel I’ve started well this season and I want to carry that on with Celtic.

“It’s great to join the biggest club in Scotland and I want to help us win more silverware in what I know is an important season for Celtic.”
