Celtic star Greg Taylor hoping to earn place in Steve Clarke's Euros squad after 'unbelievable' draw

Greg Taylor is hoping to earn a place in Steve Clarke’s 23-man squad for Euro 2024 after an “unbelievable” draw that will see the national team take part in the opening game.

Scotland will take on the hosts in Munich as the championships get under way on June 14 and the Celtic defender is keen to play a part.

Hungary and Switzerland make up Group A and the 14-times capped 26-year-old, who was part of the squad at Euro 2020, insists they won’t just be there to make up the numbers.

But he knows with squad numbers being reduced from last time, and competing with the likes of Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney for a left-back berth, he can’t take anything for granted over the next few months before Clarke picks his squad.

He said: “It’s an unbelievable draw, to get to play in the opening game for Scotland will be an amazing atmosphere and I’m sure the Tartan Army will be there in their thousands.

“So it’s a brilliant opportunity for the 23 that get to make it, and fingers crossed you do enough to be there.

“I don’t think it changes anything, the manager at Scotland has a real clear way of playing and that doesn’t really change for any opponents and, I think he touched on it already, we don’t just want to be there to take part in terms of a spectacle for the first game, we want to get something from the game, so that will be the aim when the time comes around.

“There wasn’t a big reaction from the players after the draw, I think qualifying was the big excitement of it but I think when we meet up next that will get discussed and it starts to come a bit more real.

“I think for everyone who has been involved in the squad over the last two, three, four years will want to be a part of it, we remember how good it was and how much of an honour getting selected for the last Euros was.

“There’s three places less this time so it will be that wee bit more difficult, but all you can do is try and play well and play regularly for your club and that national team manager has said that, to keep in his thoughts then when the time comes it’s down to him.

“You’ve just got to leave it all out there for your club, and that will take care of itself.”
