More than £8,000 has been raised for a charity formed in the name of late rugby player Siobhan Cattigan at last month’s 1872 Cup match at Hampden Park.
Siobhan’s Legacy of Love was established in memory of the former Scotland international, who died aged 26 in December 2021.
It was founded in 2022 by Siobhan’s family and friends to honour her life and contribution to rugby, and to support seriously ill children throughout Scotland.
The Stirling County back row represented Scotland 19 times between 2018 and 2021.
The collection for the charity took place during the December 20 fixture and was supported by rugby fans attending the game.
Funds were raised through bucket collections around the stadium, sales of limited-edition matchday programmes and Glasgow Warriors flags, and donations made via QR codes displayed on screens, in programmes and across hospitality areas.
The total surpasses the £7,500 raised through a similar collection at the 1872 Cup in 2024.
The fund supports Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and helps children with complex health conditions across Scotland access specialist services, including hippotherapy, which uses horse riding to support physical and mental wellbeing.
Glasgow Warriors interim managing director Kenny Brown said the funds raised would make a meaningful difference to children and families supported by the charity.
“Once again, our supporters showed just how special this club is,” he said. “To raise over £8,000 for Siobhan’s Legacy of Love at Hampden is an incredible achievement and something everyone connected with Glasgow Warriors can be immensely proud of.
“The generosity shown on the day is a fitting tribute to Siobhan’s memory, and these funds will make a real difference to children and families supported by the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. I’d like to thank every supporter who donated, purchased a programme or flag, and the volunteers who gave up their time to make the collection such a success.”
Siobhan’s parents, Neil and Morven Cattigan, thanked supporters for ensuring their daughter’s compassion and commitment to helping others continues to have an impact.
“Our heartfelt thanks to Glasgow Warriors for once again championing Siobhan’s Legacy of Love and honouring the life and memory of our beautiful girl,” said Neil and Morven Cattigan, Siobhan’s parents. “The kind generosity of every single person who contributed ensures that Siobhan’s compassionate spirit and unwavering dedication to helping others shines brightly, as these vital funds go directly towards supporting sick children in Scotland. Thank you all!”
Kirsten Watson, chief executive of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said the generosity of those attending would help young patients benefit from specialist support made possible through the fund.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to the generosity of those who attended the 1872 Cup match last month, and contributed to raising an outstanding £8,000,” she added.
“Thanks to their support, and the tireless commitment and generosity of Siobhan’s friends and family, young patients with complex health conditions will be able to benefit from specialist support that is only available thanks to Siobhan’s Legacy of Love.”
