Derek McInnes says Kilmarnock's focus won't waver as Celtic eye title party

Derek McInnes insists his focus will be solely on Kilmarnock when Celtic visit on Wednesday night for a potential title party.

Celtic are six points clear of Rangers at the top of the cinch Premiership with only two fixtures remaining and will be crowned champions if the Light Blues fail to beat Dundee at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

Killie knocked Celtic out of the Viaplay Cup and registered a draw and a win in their three league fixtures, while they are guaranteed fourth place and a spot in Europe, but McInnes is keen to finish the season on a high.

He said: “I haven’t even made any reference to that (a possible Celtic title win).

“We had a meeting this morning and for us, it is to concentrate on us to try to deliver a big performance again.

“You would like the last home game of the season to be a bit more about us and the fans can celebrate with the players and hopefully we can still do that with a positive result.

“For us to beat Celtic we have to do so much right and a fully-motivated Celtic team are difficult to contend with so we have to just focus on us and try to get another positive result.

“We want to finish the season right for us. Our job is done in terms of getting fourth spot and qualifying for Europe, but I know my players and Celtic coming here tomorrow night, it is a big deal, a big game, live on Sky Sports and we have an opportunity to go and show we are a good side and hopefully we can do that again.”

McInnes revealed he has had “positive talks” with Danny Armstrong over extending his contract, which has a year to run after this summer.

The Killie winger admitted it was an important summer for him and said he would “need to look at” adding to his current deal, but in the short term he is determined not to allow a Celtic title party at Rugby Park.

He said: “They have a lot to play for tomorrow, but so do we.

“We want to ruin their chances of winning the league here. We don’t want that.

“We have beaten them here twice this season, so we will be looking to do that again.

“It is an important game for us and we go into it with full intentions of trying to win the game.

“They won’t come here thinking it is an easy game, they know we won’t just roll over and let them win the game.”
