Dejected Rangers star Dujon Sterling says the club needs to get their belief back as they look to recover from a “disappointing” week and save their season.
The Ibrox side suffered a double blow to their title challenge in the space of three days after a defeat to Ross County and a draw with Dundee left them three-points behind champions Celtic at the top of the Premiership with five games remaining.
The 24-year-old, who has played in a number of positions since joining in the summer, is urging the support to keep pushing them on as they look to get back to winning form starting with Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.
Sterling says they owe the fans a big performance after only recording two wins in their last eight games in all competitions and one victory in their last five league games.
And he insists the squad need a switch of mentality and a reset back to the way they were playing at the start of the year if they want to be champions in May.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw at Dens Park on Wednesday, he said: “It’s difficult to say any words really, it’s not good enough. We’ve got a lot of work to do, we need to reset and get our heads back in the game and switch our mentality, because it’s not going in the right direction.
“There’s a still a lot of games to be played and a lot of things to fight for, so it’s just disappointing.
“We need to be more ruthless, we are fighting for a title and the way we are playing it’s as if we are not playing for anything so that’s got to change, it was like a dead rubber.
“Obviously I understand the fans are angry after the game, but hopefully they can still back us for the rest of the season and push us on.
“We just have to get back to having that belief that we can (turn it around), we had togetherness and belief, we still have the togetherness but I don’t know if the belief is there at the minute.
“Everyone’s got to just try and switch their minds back to having the belief that we can still do this.
“Of course (we can still win the league), anything can happen, right now there is still five games left which will be five cup finals and hopefully the fans can push us to get through them.
“We owe ourselves a performance on Sunday, we’ve been s**t the last few games, and I just think we need to reset and do it for the fans as well, because they come home and away with us everywhere, backing us and singing for 90/95 minutes, so we owe it to them.
“The past two weeks have been disappointing results, and I know they’ve seen it before over the past few years but hopefully we can change that.
“The dressing room is down at the minute but we just need to dust ourselves off and get back on the training ground tomorrow, review it, then park it and focus on the semi-final. “
