Dundee United have announced that they have completed the signing of Tony Watt from Motherwell.

Watt had already signed a pre-contract agreement to move to Tannadice this summer when his existing deal at Motherwell expired but the clubs were in talks to negotiate an early move.

That deal has now been agreed and Watt has signed with the Tangerines until 2025.

Watt, who has had a nomadic career after early success with Celtic and played for Lierse, Standard Liege, CSKA Sofia and others, had become a key player at Motherwell, finding the net ten times this season and leading the Premiership scoring charts.

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander had revealed earlier that Watt was poised to make the move but said that he did not intend to go into the market for an immediate replacement but was keeping options open.

“I’m quite happy with what we have got,” he said. “We have competition in all positions.

“We haven’t stopped looking, we are always looking. I know the window goes from there to there but in between there is a lot of work, a lot of analysis on players.

“We understand we can’t be over-reliant on any individual so we have always got counter-targets for any issues or players leaving.

“We feel we constantly have to try to improve. Even though we are not looking for a position, if someone comes along who we feel can improve us, we look to do something.

“That will continue to be the case. We always have players identified that we can hopefully bring in when the time is right.”
