Members of a Dundee United supporters group voted overwhelmingly to financially support the football club to the tune of £100k.

The team announced the result of the Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation ballot which will see £60k transferred to the club to “kick-start a campaign to raise a total target amount of £100k”.

There was a turnout of 92% of the voting members with 98% voting in favour of the funding proposal.

A spokesperson for the Foundation said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Foundation members have given such a resounding vote in favour of the proposal with such a fantastic turnout.

“This demonstrates the unity amongst Foundation members and our desire to assist the club financially in these difficult times where income has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

All income from the Foundation’s monthly subscriptions and donations from members will be transferred to the football club until April 30, 2020, or until the £100k is achieved if sooner.

The support follows a previous vote to transfer £100k to the club and progress with a partnership agreement in June last year.

A Dundee United Football Club spokesperson said: “Our sincere thanks go out to the Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation members for voting in favour of releasing your funds to the club.

“This resounding agreement favouring the proposal shows an understanding and united front towards the difficulties caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

“The immediate contribution of £60k, with potentially another £40k to follow will enhance our ability to get through this current situation and help us come back stronger.

“We look forward to collaborating with the Foundation on future projects and continuing to aid the recent growth of membership.

“United together, we can help to ensure we continue on the path towards the long-term success of Dundee United Football Club.”

The Foundation membership previously agreed the funds it provided would be used to invest in “brick and mortar” projects but, due to the “unprecedented financial climate”, it is hoped the cash will support the club while it deals with the impact of the pandemic.
