Dundee United’s home game against Aberdeen has been called off despite working “extensively” to ensure the Tannadice pitch is playable.
United’s Scottish Gas Scottish Cup tie with Spartans was postponed on Saturday and a yellow weather warning for rainfall in the east of Scotland cast doubt on their William Hill Premiership encounter with the Dons going ahead on Wednesday.
But following an inspection at 1pm, it was confirmed the pitch was waterlogged.
A previous club statement read: “The weather across north-east Scotland has seen unprecedented levels of rainfall throughout the recent winter months.
“This, combined with a congested home fixture schedule and the club’s commitment to doing everything possible to fulfil fixtures, has placed significant strain on the pitch.
“A range of pitch-protection measures have taken place during this period. These actions have been crucial in enabling fixtures to proceed during prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.
“However, they have had an unavoidable impact on the visual appearance of the playing surface.
“This has been the necessary compromise in ensuring continuity across an exceptionally demanding run of home fixtures during extraordinary weather conditions.
“Following Saturday’s postponement, staff have continued to work extensively to improve conditions and prepare the pitch for upcoming matches.”
United stated that their pitch was playable at 1pm on Tuesday but warned of forecasts of “significant rainfall” in the period before the game.
The statement added: “The club remains in regular dialogue with the SPFL and our opponents, Aberdeen FC.
“While there is currently no plan for a pitch inspection, this remains a fluid situation and may change depending on weather conditions.”
