Eilish McColgan has set a new British half marathon record, beating a time set by Paula Radcliffe 21 years ago.
The Scot wrote her name into the record books with an impressive run at the Ras Al Khaimah race in United Arab Emirates.
McColgan crossed the line in one hour, six minutes and 26 seconds, taking 21 seconds off Radcliffe’s long-standing record.
Ethiopian runner Girmawit Gebrzihair Gebru took victory with a course record of 1:04:14.
McColgan’s mother, former world champion at 10,000m, celebrated her daughter’s success and pointed out that she had also smashed a family record. She tweeted “Well, that’s another of my family records gone this morning by @eilishmccolgan, but at least it took a British record to get it. 1:06:26. #proudmum #proudcoach #pb”.
The 31-year-old has previously set British records at 5,000m both indoors and on the road.
