England ease to victory over Scotland in 150th anniversary game at Hampden

England have eased to victory over Scotland at Hampden in the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between the pair.

Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane all scored for the visitors as they ended the national team’s eleven game winning run in Glasgow.

An own goal from Harry Maguire gave Steve Clarke’s side some hope in the second half but they eventually fell well short against a vastly superior side.

Scotland also missed out on a chance to secure their place at Euro 2024 with Norway beating Georgia in Oslo to keep the Tartan Army sweating on a place in Germany next summer.

England had the first real chance of the game, but Arsenal midfielder headed over the bar from a corner after seven minutes.

It was a scrappy in the opening stages with both sides struggling to get a foot hold on the game despite a vociferous backing from the Hampden crowd.

And Gareth Southgate’s men were ahead on the half-hour mark when Phil Foden turned a cross from Kyle Walker past Angus Gunn.

And Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham doubled the lead just minutes later to give Scotland a mountain to climb and make it 2-0.

The home side then had their first real chance after a lung bursting run from Kieran Tierney and they were claiming for a penalty when the ball looked as if it came off Guehi’s hand to block Adams’ chance, but the Italian ref waved it away after a quick VAR check.

Scotland started the second-half with intent and John McGinn had a shot deflected before Billy Gilmour fired wide.

Callum McGregor then dinked the ball to the back post but it was cleared before Andy Robertson could connect at the back post.

Harry Kane then came close to making it three, but his effort was high over Gunn’s goals.

Steve Clarke then rang the changes with Che Adams and Billy Gilmour replaced by Lyndon Dykes and Ryan Christie.

And Scotland were back in it when Robertson’s cross deflected off of Harry Maguire and past Ramsdale to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go.

But England captain Harry Kane made restored the goal lead and made it 3-1 after a lovely through ball from Bellingham with ten minutes to go.

In 116 games since 1872, England have now won 48 to Scotland’s 41 with the Tartan Army waiting 24 years since a win over the Auld Enemy.
