FA considering appeal over Jarell Quansah red card in England Mexico match

It comes after Donald Trump asked Fifa to review a decision to send off US star striker Folarin Balogun, leading to the decision being overturned.

The Football Association is considering whether to appeal against England defender Jarell Quansah’s red card during the thrilling World Cup win over Mexico.

Quansah was sent off following a VAR review of a high tackle on Jesus Gallardo.

Thomas Tuchel’s side spent much of the second half down to 10 men at the Estadio Azteca.

The FA is weighing up its options after USA star striker Folarin Balogun had a red card overturned following intervention by President Donald Trump, who says he called Fifa President Gianni Infantino about the decision.

Trump was mocked when the co-hosts were knocked out of the tournament in a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in Seattle.

England had to dig deep to secure a famous 3-2 last-16 win against Mexico, but Quansah is due to be suspended for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami.

Tuchel was annoyed by the decision and overall refereeing standards at the competition.

Despite being sent off against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Balogun was cleared to play last night after the Fifa Disciplinary Committee announced it would suspend his one-match ban for a year, leading to widespread criticism within the game.

Put to Tuchel that might raise hopes for Bayer Leverkusen player Quansah, 23, taking part in the weekend’s crucial clash, the Three Lions boss said: “Where does this start and where does this end now?

“Can we overturn it or not overturn it? What’s going on? Where to draw the line is the question that I ask. I have no answer to that. Where does this end now?

“Do we appeal if a yellow card is not a yellow card? Do we think it is not a red card or who thinks it?

“Where does this start and where does this end? It’s my question. I don’t have an answer.”

Meanwhile, Harry Kane said England will have to “calm down” after producing one of the best World Cup results in recent memory.

In a video on social media, the captain commented: “Into the next round. Incredible night, we appreciate the support, I know we had loads in the stadium and loads watching back home staying up late.

“The connection with everyone is even stronger now and we feel that more than ever.

“We recover now, we calm down, we have a couple of days relaxing and then obviously get prepared for a massive quarter-final.”

Kane, whose second-half penalty proved decisive, said the Azteca experience and the nature of the win made it one of his favourite games in an England shirt.

“Going into that game was so special, the atmosphere, the stadium….everyone was so excited to be there and play in this iconic game,” he said.

“To come through the adversities in the game and battle through the way we did and put our bodies on the line and the boys covering every blade of grass was just incredible to be part of, to be honest.

“It’s one of my favourite games in an England shirt, without a doubt. Full credit to all the boys, so proud of everyone, all the staff, everyone involved.

“We knew the test we were going into, we knew how tough it would be and we came out on top.”
