Scotland’s star man Finn Russell has walked out on Scotland after being told he wouldn’t be considered for selection for the opening Six Nations match after allegedly breaching team rules on drinking alcohol, STV has learned.
Russell is understood to have been drinking alcohol at the team hotel on Sunday night.
It is thought he was warned to stop by others in the camp but didn’t and continued to drink.
After a discussion with head coach Gregor Townsend, Russell was offered to remain part of the camp to help the rest of the team prepare for the Ireland match – although he himself would not be considered for selection.
However, the fly-half has turned that offer down and has returned to Paris where he will prepare to play for his club Racing this weekend.
It is unclear whether he will return to face England or play any part in the Six Nations.
In a brief statement on social media, a Scottish Rugby spokesperson said earlier: “Stand-off Finn Russell will play no further part in preparations for Scotland’s Six Nations opener against Ireland, having been disciplined for a breach of team protocol during the week’s camp in Edinburgh. He has returned to his club.”
