Billy Gilmour says Scotland will be aiming to give the Tartan Army something to cheer for when they return to Hampden for next month’s World Cup double header.

The national team beat Belarus 2-0 to keep their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in North America next summer on track.

They now have four points from their opening two qualifiers, with both games played away from home, giving them a good base to build from as they look to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

The only disappointment from the camp was the fact that no fans were in the stadium to witness Monday night’s victory, which was played behind closed doors in Hungary.

And Napoli midfielder Gilmour insists they will now look to give the supporters something to cheer when they return to Glasgow for games against Greece and Belarus in October.

Speaking after the game in Hungary, he said: “We knew we had to start quickly, especially against teams like this who always make it difficult and, of course, without the fans here as well.

“It can be difficult to get yourself going (in an empty stadium), but you could hear us on the pitch constantly talking to each other and pushing each other through, the boys on the bench as well, and the staff.

“So full credit to everyone, it’s been a good camp.”

Despite not being allowed in the stadium, Gilmour revealed the squad were heartened by some dedicated fans who made the trip regardless.

He said: “It’s a massive miss, as we know how good our fans are when we travel away and play at home.

“It is always difficult without them, but I’m sure we made them happy. We saw the fans who made it over and were outside the stadium, so that was amazing to see.

“The fans will be back for the next camp. This was an important camp to get off to a good start, so next time we will have the fans back at Hampden, which is good for us, and we’ll make sure we make them happy.”
