Can Celtic make history by pulling off miracle in Munich?

It will take a Herculean effort from Brendan Rodgers' men to win at the Allianz Arena and dump the six-time champions of Europe out of the Champions League.

Marianplatz, Munich – the scene of a tartan takeover last summer, but now it’s the Celtic fans who’ve turned this famous old square into their home for the last couple of days.

They’ve come in their thousands hoping to see their team pull off what would be one of their greatest-ever results.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, it will take a Herculean effort from Brendan Rodgers’ men to win at the Allianz Arena and dump the six-time champions of Europe out of the competition.

As we made our way to the stadium on Monday for the media conferences, all the memories of the Euros came flooding back.

The excitement of the curtain raiser against the hosts, the anticipation of Scotland at a major tournament and then, of course, the anguish as Germany tore Steve Clarke’s side apart.

From a selfish point of view, it was just nice to arrive at a foreign stadium and actually know where to go instead of endlessly walking about searching for the car park or media entrance – it happens way more than you think.

Celtic fans will be hoping it’s a different story in the same stadium tonight, and the last 20 minutes of the first leg will give them some encouragement.

They wounded Munich. They rattled Vincent Kompany’s men for a brief spell, and that’s what Rodgers will cling to.

The Parkhead boss has worked wonders this Champions League campaign to get Celtic to where they are now.

Once the nearly men who always faltered, Celtic now seem a Champions League-ready side, able to cope with the big occasion (Dortmund aside, of course).

But be in no doubt. This will be their toughest assignment.

Arguably one of the toughest tests in world football, it doesn’t get much bigger than taking on Munich at the Allianz.

This is where Celtic must show how far they’ve come as a Champions League outfit. Can they learn from previous matches and string together what needs to be a perfect 90-minute (and maybe more) performance?

Can they pull off the miracle in Munich and undoubtedly write their names into Celtic folklore or will it be auf Wiedersehen to the Champions League for another season?
