Celtic have confirmed the sale of midfielder Matt O’Riley to Brighton and Hove Albion in a deal understood to be in the region of £30m – the most expensive transfer in Scottish football history.
The deal smashes the previous Scottish transfer record of £25m for Jota’s move from Celtic to Al Ittihad in 2023.
In two and a half years in Glasgow, O’Riley played 124 times and scored 27 goals, helping the club win the Scottish Premiership three times, and a league and cup double.
The 23-year-old swept the board at the club’s awards in 2023/24, being voted Celtic’s Player of the year, winning Players’ Player and Young Player of the Season, as well as being nominated in the PFA’s Scottish Premiership team of the season.
The Danish international has signed a five-year contract until June 2029 with the English Premiership side.
A statement from Celtic read: “We can confirm that Matt O’Riley has joined English Premier League side, Brighton and Hove Albion.
“Everyone at CelticFC would like to thank Matt for his vast contribution and efforts for the Club.
“Best of luck and thank you, Matt.”
