Connor Barron believes Rangers showed their character to battle back from a goal down to beat Old Firm rivals Celtic 3-1 on Saturday.

Danny Rohl’s side were put through the mill in the first half of the Premiership clash at Parkhead and were fortunate to be losing only by one goal from South Korea international Yang Hyun-jun.

The Gers boss swapped midfielder Thelo Aasgaard for Mohamed Diomande at half-time and the Light Blues mounted a comeback, with striker Youssef Chermiti scoring twice in nine minutes before Mikey Moore added a third in the 71st minute to leave Celtic stunned.

Rangers moved on to the same points tally as their Old Firm rivals and six behind Hearts who beat Livingston 1-0 at Tynecastle.

“Yes, definitely the belief was there from the start and even when we go a goal down, we still believe we can get back in the game,” said 23-year-old midfielder Barron.

“It was real good character from the boys to get back in it.

“I thought we showed real discipline at times and we’ve seen the game out at the right moments, so it was a real character performance from the boys.

“Going behind wasn’t nice, obviously, but at half-time we made a few tweaks tactically and in our formation, we got after them a lot better in the second half and it paid off.

“We tweaked the formation, which made us a bit more dominant going forward and a bit more of a threat in the transition.

“I felt, pressing-wise, we were a bit off it in the first half, so we got closer as well.

“All these little messages were in the changing room, but, as I say, it’s little tweaks and all the boys picked up on it well and we went out there and done it.”

The former Aberdeen player, capped once by Scotland, shut down title talk as he focused only on the visit of the Dons on Tuesday night.

He said: “Every win, you get that belief and you get that excitement, but Saturday is just another win for us.

“It’s obviously derby day and a lot of talk around the game, but you’ve got to block that out.

“You’ve got to go there and do your job, which we did and we look forward to Aberdeen, so it’s taking it game by game.

“Obviously, nobody’s stupid. We all look at the league table. We’re all in football, but it’s our job to stay focused.

“As I say, the game comes again on Tuesday, thick and fast, and we’ve got another one after that.

“We’ve just got to keep focused. We concentrate on what we’ve been working on and what we can do as a team to win matches.”

Barron was pleased to see the much-maligned Chermiti, regularly criticised since joining from Everton in the summer for a reported fee of around £8million, grab a brace to double his Rangers tally for the season.

He said: “He took his two goals brilliantly. It was massive for the big man. He works his socks off every week.

“He’ll gain massive confidence from it and it’s good to see.”
