Connor Barron knows a World Cup place with Scotland next summer depends on making his mark at Rangers this season.

The 23-year-old midfielder, whose only cap to date was in a substitute appearance against Liechtenstein last summer, was a late call-up by Steve Clarke for the final two Group C qualifiers.

He did not get any game time although he was as delighted as anyone when the Scots clinched their place in the finals for the first time since 1998 with a thrilling 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday night.

The former Aberdeen player has been in and out of the Gers side this season first under Russell Martin and then his successor Danny Rohl.

Ahead of the home Premiership game against Livingston at Ibrox on Saturday, he conceded a possible place in dark blue in North America will be down to performances in light blue at home.

He said: “That’s the plan, first and foremost.

“I’ve got to fix myself into the (Rangers) team and be playing well and hopefully that comes.

“You’ve got to do the business here and focus on putting performances in here before that happens.

“It’s down to me doing the work here and as I say, performing well to get to the World Cup.

“Obviously you change your thinking straight back on to club football again the minute you come back in.

“And we’re fully focused on the game tomorrow and making that four (league) wins out of four.

“We look at one game at a time and we’ve got to get three points tomorrow.”
