History lesson: Celtic v Hearts in the Scottish Cup final

Celtic face Hearts in the final of the Scottish Cup for the second year running as they look to make it a historic quadruple treble.

This is the fifth time the Glasgow giants have faced the team from the capital in the final, with the scores tied at two wins apiece.

Here’s a look back at their previous showpiece head-to-heads.

1901 – Celtic 3 Hearts 4

Celtic were looking to become only the third side to make it a hat-trick of consecutive cup wins as they faced the Jambos at Ibrox. A meagre crowd of 16,000 turned out with many fans put off by the poor weather on the day and the pricey one shilling admission charge. A young Jimmy Quinn helped lead the Hoops’ fightback after they found themselves 3-1 down but Mark Bell’s second goal sent the cup back to Gorgie for the third time.

1907 – Celtic 3 Hearts 0

Hearts were the holders again when the teams met again in the final six years later – but this time it was the Parkhead men who were left celebrating at Hampden as they became the first Scottish side to complete the league and cup double thanks to a penalty from veteran skipper Willie Orr and Peter Somers’ brace.

1956 – Celtic 1 Hearts 3

Hearts had gone 49 years without winning the Scottish Cup after their 1906 triumph over Third Lanark. That long hoodoo was finally smashed in front of a 132,000-strong crowd at Hampden. Celtic, appearing in their third straight final, found themselves two down to Ian Crawford’s double before hitting back with a Mike Haughney goal. But their hopes of forcing a replay were snuffed out when Alfie Conn – whose son Alfie Junior who would go on to win the cup with both Rangers and Celtic in the 1970s – struck with 10 minutes remaining.

2019 – Celtic 2 Hearts 1

Exactly 52 years after Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup, Neil Lennon’s side completed a historic treble treble as the Parkhead faithful paid an emotional tribute to recently departed Lisbon Lions Billy McNeill and Stevie Chalmers at Hampden. Ryan Edwards fired Hearts ahead but Odsonne Edouard levelled from the spot before hitting an 82nd-minute winner. The all-conquering champions found their open-top bus parade mobbed by thousands of jubilant fans on their way back to the east end of Glasgow.
