Scotland’s crucial World Cup qualifier with Moldova on Friday night will bring back bad memories for Berti Vogts.
It’s 17 years since a draw in Chişinău cost him his job as Scotland manager, as our hopes of reaching the 2006 tournament in his home country of Germany lay in tatters.
Scotland return to the same city knowing that a win will secure a spot in the qualification play-offs for the 2022 World Cup.
Back in November 2004, Vogts was already under pressure after opening Group Five with just one point from two home games when Serghei Dadu put the Moldovans ahead after 28 minutes.
Steven Thomson equalised quickly, but Scotland couldn’t find a winner and two weeks later Vogts resigned, citing “the disgraceful abuse I have suffered”.
In pictures, he’s a look back at that fateful night in Moldova.
