Rangers have appointed ex-Liverpool defender Stig Inge Bjornebye as a football consultant and advisor, STV understands.

The 56-year-old former Norway international has joined the Ibrox club for an initial period of around six months, starting this week, and will work alongside the club’s existing football leadership.

Bjornebye made 184 appearances for Liverpool during a seven year spell at Anfield in the 1990s.

He also played for Blackburn Rovers, Rosenborg and Brondby, and represented his country 75 times.

Since retiring from playing in 2003, he has held sporting director roles for Rosenborg and, most recently, Aarhus in Denmark.

It is understood he will work in an advisory and supportive capacity at Rangers, providing additional experience and perspective on football matters, including contributing to planning and activity ahead of the January transfer window, and will report to Andrew Cavenagh.

The club continues its search for a permanent sporting director, following the departure of Kevin Thelwell, and will take the necessary time to make the right appointment.
