STV Sport understands that Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh, vice chairman Paraag Marathe are in London and will hold talks with Steven Gerrard on Thursday over the vacant manager’s position.
Gerrard, who was Ibrox boss between 2018 and 2021, is under serious consideration for the post, but other candidates are also on the shortlist.
Grétar Steinsson, who is a key figure under the new owners at Rangers, is also involved in the recruitment process.
The former England and Liverpool captain was the last Rangers manager to win the Premiership four years ago, before quitting for English Premier League side Aston Villa during the following campaign.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast prior to Russell Martin’s sacking, Gerrard said he has unfinished business in management.
And on Wednesday, Ferdinand told Talksport Breakfast that he believes Gerrard would return to Ibrox for a second spell.
Martin, who was appointed as head coach in the summer, departed Ibrox on Sunday after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.
That result leaves them eighth in the Premiership with just one win from their first seven league games.
Gerrard is currently out of work after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January.
In separate interviews with STV Sport this week, both former chairman Dave King and ex-Rangers player Kevin Thomson, backed Gerrard to replace Martin.
