Rangers hold talks with Shanghai Port boss Kevin Muscat over head coach position

Rangers have held talks with Shanghai Port manager Kevin Muscat as they look to appoint a new head coach.

The former Australian international, who has won league titles as manager in three different countries, spent the 2002/03 season at Rangers and helped the club win a treble under Alex McLeish.

The 52-year-old, who also played for Crystal Palace, Wolves, and Millwall in the UK, has previously managed Melbourne Victory in Australia and Japanese side Yokohama Marinos, as well as a short spell at Sint-Truiden in Belgium.

Shanghai Port are currently two points clear at the top of the Chinese Super League with four games remaining.

Their league season comes to an end next month.

Rangers are looking for a replacement to former head coach Russell Martin who was sacked after just one win in their first seven league games.

Martin, who was appointed in the summer, lasted just 17 games in all competitions and left with the club sitting eighth in the Premiership.

Steven Gerrard was initially identified as a number one target, but after talks he decided to reject the offer to return to Ibrox.

Derek McInnes has also been linked with the job, but he has told STV Sport that he is “absolutely committed” to Hearts after leading the Tynecastle club to top spot in the Premiership.

After being named Premiership Manager of the Month for September, McInnes said: “I’m the Hearts manager. Normally, when managers are doing well, sometimes there can be speculation.

“Equally, when managers aren’t doing well, there can be speculation about their own job, but for us, at Hearts, we are just concentrating on our work.”
