Rangers win Europa League group after beating Lech Poznan

Rangers have beaten Lech Poznan 2-0 to win their Europa League group and ensure they are seeded in the last 32 draw.

Cedric Itten and Ianis Hagi scored the goals in Poland as Steven Gerrard’s side continued their unbeaten run.

Steven Gerrard’s side went into the match leading the group and with qualification secured but knowing that if Benfica bettered their result then they would lose top spot and the opportunity for a favourable draw in the next round.

Gerrard made seven changes to the side that had beaten Ross County last weekend and saw his team relatively untroubled by a Lech Poznan team who had no hope of qualifying and who had also rested some first choice players.

Itten opened the scorting before half time, seizing on a defensive mistake and beating his man before lasing a shot high into the net at the near post.

Rangers remained in control after the break but made sure of the win after 72 minutes.

Connor Goldson’s header crashed down off the bar and onto the line and Hagi was well-placed to apply the finishing touch, nodding the ball in.

In the other group game, Standard Liege and Benfica drew 2-2 in Belgium, meaning Rangers finished two points clear at the top and will collect another £900,000 prize money from UEFA as well as avoiding a Champions League side in Monday’s draw.
