Scotland v Greece: Christie aiming for a memorable night at Hampden

Steve Clarke's men are preparing for a Hampden double header that could go a long way to securing their spot at the World Cup.

Ryan Christie is hoping Scotland can give the Tartan Army a night to remember when they take on Greece in a vital World Cup qualifier.

Steve Clarke’s men are preparing for a Hampden double header over the next four days that could potentially go a long way to securing their spot in North America.

The national team have four points from their first two games, which were both away from home, so a win over Greece on Thursday could put them in a commanding position ahead of the visit of Belarus on Sunday.

Christie has been part of some famous nights at the national stadium over the years, including cup final and semi-final victories, and he insists big wins with Scotland are the most memorable.

The 30-year-old Bournemouth midfielder said: “It’s the games you want to be part of.

“I think back to the results we’ve had here and the obvious ones, against Spain (2-0 win in European Championship qualifying) and we’ve beat Denmark here (2-0 in a World Cup qualifier), which was a great night.

“You look back, it’s probably the fondest memories I’ve got in my career.

“So you want to keep making more of those memories and keep building on it, especially when you know what the prize is at the end of it.”

However, Christie is also aware Greece beat Scotland 3-0 in a Nations League play-off at Hampden in March to relegate Clarke’s side to League B, with 3-1 the aggregate score.

The former Inverness, Celtic, and Aberdeen player said: “It was obviously a frustrating night for us.

“We will definitely watch clips from that game in terms of trying to learn from it and where we can avoid the mistakes we made on the night and hurt them a little bit more.

“Probably looking back at the game, we actually started the game all right, to be honest.

“When you look back, 3-0 flatters them and they were cut-throat on the night.

“What we need to remember is how well the boys – not me – did out there in the first leg to go and get a (1-0) result.

“So it is a team we obviously know we can beat, so we have the chance tomorrow night to put things right from what happened in March.

“You certainly don’t like getting beaten in front of your own fans and you would like to put that right, especially the way the scoreline finished.

“We are in a new place now and there is probably more on the line going into this one.

“It’s been a while since we played at Hampden in one of these qualifying campaigns so we are looking forward to it.”
