Tounekti: 'Confident' Celtic aiming to go far in Europa League

The Hoops are preparing for a trip to Denmark to take on Europa League leaders FC Midtjylland.

Sebastian Tounekti insists Celtic can go deep into the Europa League as confidence within the squad continues to grow following their “amazing” win over Rangers.

The Tunisian winger impressed in the 3-1 win over their city rivals in the League Cup semi-final at the weekend.

And, as they prepare for a trip to Denmark to take on Europa League leaders FC Midtjylland on Thursday, he believes the squad are now in a good place.

The Hoops have four points from their first three games, following a draw in Belgrade, home defeat to Braga, and comeback win over Sturm Graz, and with some tough fixtures ahead they are looking to keep their campaign on track with a positive result.

Speaking to STV Sport, he said: “It’s going to be a difficult game against Midtjylland, who are doing really well, but from our point of view we are looking good at the moment as well.

“We feel like the confidence is growing now. It will be a tough game, but I think it will be an open game and one that we can win.”

Former manager Brendan Rodgers resigned from his position just over a week ago, following a defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle, with Martin O’Neill taking over on an interim basis.

The caretaker boss has won both of his opening games, a 4-0 win over Falkirk was followed up by the Hampden victory over Rangers, and he is now preparing for his third game in a third different competition.

And Tounekti believes the mood of the squad is in a much better place as a result.

He said: “I think our confidence is growing a lot, especially after the last game against Rangers, because that is a big game and a special game so to win that one was really amazing.

“You can feel the confidence within the squad growing now.

“We are confident as a team, and we want to go far in the Europa League. Maybe the start hasn’t been the best, but I feel we are in a much better place now and we want to fight in every competition we are in.

“So we want to do really well in the Europa League and we see it as a real possibility to do that, so we have a really important match on Thursday.

“We have to go there and get a result, so we are really looking forward to the game.”
