St Mirren have defeated Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final at Hampden to win the season’s first piece of silverware.
Stephen Robinson’s side ran out 3-1 winners at the national stadium on Sunday to lift their first major honour in 12 years.
It is the second time they have won the tournament, and, in doing so, they inflicted more pain upon Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy, who has now lost all three of his opening games since joining from Columbus Crew earlier this month.
St Mirren captain Marcus Fraser handed his side an early lead before Reo Hatate grabbed an equaliser in a frantic first half.
Jonah Ayunga put the Saints back in front with a header on the hour mark and the forward grabbed his second soon after to seal a well-deserved victory.
It was a dream start for the Saints when Fraser opened the scoring within the first two minutes when he fired home a header past Kasper Schmeichel from a corner.
Celtic were nearly level on the ten-minute mark, but Shamal George produced a great save to deny Kelechi Iheanacho.
Other than that, it was St Mirren who looked the more dangerous in the opening stages, with their front two proving to be a real handful for the Hoops backline.
Daizen Maeda and Hatate both came close midway through the first half as the cup holders looked for an equaliser.
And it was the midfielder who got them level soon after when he made a darting run into the box to meet an inch-perfect cross by Kieran Tierney and slot the ball past George and into the net.
Celtic then started to take control of the game towards the end of the half, but they were unable to get themselves in front and the game remained 1-1 going into the break.
St Mirren got themselves back in front on the hour mark when a ball into the box found Schmeichel in no-man’s land and Ayunga nodded the ball into the net to make it 2-1.
The Paisley side impressed in the second half as they took the game to Celtic, and Ayunga struck again with 15 minutes to go to put the game beyond the Hoops.
