St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson is glad of the quick chance to put Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup disappointment behind him.

The Buddies began their season with a goalless draw against Arbroath at Gayfield which left the Northern Irishman frustrated.

Saints captain Mark O’Hara was sent off in the 88th minute after picking up a second yellow card and, to cap off a disappointing afternoon, the visitors lost the penalty shoot-out 5-3, with the Championship side taking the bonus point.

St Mirren travel to Forfar on Tuesday night for their second Group D game and Robinson expects better.

He told the club’s official X account: “We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves.

“It’s disappointing for us, disappointing for the people that travelled a long way on a Saturday when they could have been sitting in the garden – I bet they wish they had done.

“But it’s a group of boys that have never let me down over a longer period of time. As I say, we have to be and will be better than that.

“We have to react to it, we will be better. We have to do simple things which we didn’t do.

“We tried to complicate our game, when we played against Airdrie (friendly) we didn’t. Simple balls, three passes we got into the opposition half.

“It was too slow. It was too pedestrian and credit to Arbroath they were well-organised, they defended very well when they needed to.

“We didn’t create enough and bar Peter (Urminsky, goalkeeper), we could have lost the game.”
