Former Celtic footballer Pat McCluskey dies aged 68

Former Celtic footballer Pat McCluskey has died at the age of 68.

McCluskey made 191 appearances and scored 13 goals for the club during an eight-year spell.

Tributes came from the likes of Sir Kenny Dalglish, who described McCluskey as “fantastic company”.

A versatile player, who featured in defence and midfield, McCluskey’s competitive debut came against Albion Rovers in 1972.

During the 1971/72 season, he played both legs of Celtic’s European Cup semi-final against Inter Milan.

While at the club, he won three league titles, two Scottish Cups and the League Cup

He later had spells with Dumbarton, Airdrie and Queen of the South.

A Celtic statement said: “Everyone at Celtic Football Club is saddened to hear of the death of former player, Pat McCluskey, who has passed away at the age of 68.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Pat’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Former teammates and friends posted tributes on social media.

Sir Kenny said: “Sad to hear the news about Pat McCluskey.

“Shared many happy years and many laughs with him growing up at Celtic. Fantastic company as well as a very good player.”

Stuart Millar, director of football at Airdrie, added: “It was a great pleasure to have been Pat’s team-mate.

“As a young player I was in awe of this experienced player who had featured in so many big games, including two European semi-finals whilst a Celtic player – I even forgave him for scoring against Airdrie in the 1975 cup final!

“Most recently he was a guest of the club last season, and as usual he was great value as he entertained guests in hospitality. They certainly don’t make them like they used to.”
