Former Dunfermline Athletic and Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood has died aged 69.

The Glaswegian also managed Kilmarnock and Ross County in Scotland as well as spells in the Netherlands at Go Ahead Eagles, De Graafschap and NEC Nijmigen.

He is best known for the ten years spent between East End Park and Pittodrie from 1999-2009.

Calderwood took Dunfermline to the top-flight and reached a Scottish Cup final before moving to Aberdeen in 2004.

He finished third in the league with the Dons before embarking on a memorable European run that included group-stage wins over Copenhagen and Dnipro.

The run to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup ended against Bayern Munich after a memorable 2-2 draw at Pittodrie and defeat in Germany.

In 2017 he was diagnosed with dementia, three-years after his final game in management with De Graafschap.

Dunfermline paid tribute to their former manager on Sunday.

A statement released on social media said: “Everyone at Dunfermline Athletic is hugely saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Jimmy Calderwood.

“Jimmy, along with assistant Jimmy Nicholl, was at the helm of the club during one of its most successful periods in the club’s modern history.

“Promotion in his first season into the SPFL was followed by the highest-ever SPL position, finishing fourth in the 2003/04 season, during which season he also guided the club to a first Scottish Cup final since 1968 and a return to European football.”
