Former Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has broken his silence over a road traffic accident that left a motorcyclist in hospital and saw the footballer arrested for alleged drink driving.

Morelos, who is currently on loan at Atletico Nacional in Colombia, was arrested after his car hit a motorcyclist in Rionegro, Antioquia. Pictures of the incident were widely shared on social media.

Newspapers in the South American country shared a statement from the Antioquia Traffic and Transportation Section that read: “Mr. Alfredo Jose Morelos Aviles, a forward for the Atletico Nacional club, was arrested.

“He was driving a pickup truck, causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence of alcohol (grade 2), resulting in personal injuries to Mr. Sebastian Guillermo Davila Valderrama.”

The 28-year-old has now published a message on social media addressing what he said was “an unexpected and unfortunate situation”. Morelos apologised to his club and teammates and said that he was working to “clarify” the details surrounding the crash.

He wrote: “I want to share with you that, days ago, I was involved in a traffic accident while I was on my way to training. Although it was an unexpected and unfortunate situation, unfortunately, one person was injured. Since that moment, I have been committed to collaborating with his recovery and to providing my full disposition to the authorities so that the facts are clarified fairly.

“I sincerely regret any inconvenience this incident may have caused to the club and my teammates. I deeply appreciate the support you have always given me and I regret having caused concern to those who trust in my commitment. It is clear to me how much this jersey means to me and how much I value each member of the team.

“Thank you, fans, for your unconditional support. I remain focused and more committed than ever to defending these colours with dedication and passion.

“With the help of God and justice, I hope that all the details will be clarified soon.

“With love, Alfredo Morelos.”

Morelos spent six years as a Rangers player, scoring 124 goals in his time at Ibrox. He left last season when his contract expired and signed for Brazilian side Santos after a spell without a club.

He made the loan move from Santos to Atletico Nacional in December and has played 15 times for the Colombian club.
